Barfield Park offers a wide range of trails and has a nature center that offers free programs to children. The park has a lot of trails for being in a major city and a lot of them are "wild" as compared to paved trails. The Rocky Trail is one of the hardest trails I've ever hiked and features a lot of jumping over crevasses and ankle turning limestone. Not a trail I'd take young kids on. There are paved trails, a butterfly trail and some less treacherous routes that go by the river. The park offers disc golf and has a huge baseball complex. This is probably the park I use the most in town, but be warned that the longer trails are harder.

Hidden about 3.6 miles on the loop through Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park lives the Pearl Harbor Tree. There's a large parking area at about 3.6 where you can park you car and then walk down to a turn in the road where you will see a path off into the woods. You can also park a car there as there is a pull off, but it only fits about one vehicle. Head into the woods following the path and you'll see it turn to a hill on your left. At the top of the hill sits the Pearl Harbor tree, a tree that a family living in the cove on December 7, 1941 planted the day of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The tree is covered in memorial flags and has a metal tag around it establishing when it was planted and why. It really is a nice scavenger hunt item in the cove and a really neat piece of history.
Tennessee might not be the first place you think when you hear "covered bridge", but the state can boast of some nice ones, both modern and original. One nice representation of a modern covered bridge is the one at David Crockett State Park in Lawrenceburg. This bridge even has a pedestrian sidewalk on the outside of it to manage traffic.
